Proto-Pasta Magnetic Iron PLA 1.75mm

Ref. PRO-MAG-IRO-PLA-328
Magnetic Iron PLA 1.75mm filament from Proto-Pasta is, as its name suggests, a PLA that contains iron, meaning it can be attracted by a magnet, like a piece of pure iron. The magnetism of this ferrous PLA filament opens up new possibilities for 3D printing. 125g filament pack (without spoolholder).

Description

Magnetic Iron PLA 1.75mm filament from Proto Pasta

Magnetic Iron 1.75mm filament - as its name suggests - attracts magnets and behaves similarly to pure iron, even rusting. This magnetism opens a new world of practical applications and fun creations, and is an excellent choice for numerous applications.

What is the composition of iron filament?

Magnetic iron is a compound of PLA Natureworks 4043D and fine-ground iron powder. Filament-shaped, it is rather fragile and must be handled with care to avoid breaking it.

What is the magnetic effect?

Iron is defined as 'magnetic', but it is, more precisely, ferromagnetic. This means that it is attracted by magnetic fields. So it attracts magnets. The printed object does not work like a magnet but is attracted.

Is it more durable?

No, its strength is comparable to PLA, in fact a little less so because it includes ground particles which weakens it once printed.

Does it conduct?

No, the iron content is too low. For a conducting/conductive effect, you can try conductive filament from Proto Pasta.

How do you get a 'rusty' effect?

For a rusty effect, just lightly sand the surface of your print with a filament brush to expose more iron particles to the air, then place the print in a saline solution for 2-3 days.
